NORTHEAST NEIGHBORHOOD MURAL
Creating welcoming space for all.
The Story
Year Completed: 2012
Dimensions: 4 feet x 132 feet
Medium: Acrylic paint
Commissioning Agency: Northeast Neighborhood Association, Olympia, WA
Collaborators: Northeast Neighborhood Association and other members of the community.
The goal of this project was to create a welcoming atmosphere at the entrance to the Northeast Neighborhood. Beyond that, we wanted the mural to prevent graffiti, welcome people to the neighborhood, give new people a sense of what the residents felt was important in their neighborhood, involve community members in the design and painting, and to be designed in a way that it would be easy to fix if it was vandalized. After completing a community design process, I facilitated over 40 youth and adult volunteers to paint this mural.
